GM has confirmed it will cut 1,000 jobs at its Oshawa, Ont., assembly plant, even as it announces $5.4 billion US in investment in its American operations.

On Thursday, GM confirmed the end of production for the Chevrolet Camaro at the Oshawa Assembly plant will be Nov. 20 of this year. The plant is still waiting for the company to announce a model to be made after 2016, but GM claims it does not yet have a model ready to go into the plant.

By December of this year, Oshawa will have 2,600 employees, building five vehicles: the Chevrolet Impala, Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, the Impala Limited, and the Chevrolet Equinox

This is pretty sad for us Canuckians. I can’t say for sure, but I know a big factor in having all these companies leaving Ontario, (Kelloggs, Electomotive, Bick’s pickles, Hersheys, A.O. Smith Water heaters’, Campbell’s Soup, E.D Smith...I could go on....) is the sky rocketing electricity costs in this province. I myself pay about $81 bucks a month for my 1 bedroom, and I don’t even leave my lights on very much or own crap like a Microwave, or a washer and dryer or air conditioner or dishwasher.

Think I’m lying?

Here’s news from the Goodyear factory down in Napanee (between Cornwall and Kingston on the 401)

“Goodyear will not be going ahead with a multi-million dollar plant expansion in Napanee, as the international tire giant has decided to open up in Mexico.

Prince Edward County mayor Robert Quaiff says someone close to the situation told the Ontario Warden’s Caucus today the concerns surrounding dependable electricity in Napanee coupled with rising hydro rates fueled the decision.”

A manufacturing hub like Ontario needs to get it’s electricity market under control. That’s my opinion and I am sticking to it. In the meantime, buh bye Camaro, and sorry to those whom lost their jobs.

It's interesting. Canada's GDP is down so far this year. Glad you mentioned it isn't just GM that is starting a withdrawal, and recent Canadian policies haven't helped.

I really think this is an Ontario made problem. Other places like Saskatchewan are continuing to grow despite the price of oil falling. This is a government of Ontario caused problem, not a national government caused problem.

Yes this is right it will be built in Michigan. Ontario needs more nuclear and less wind.

No, I'm implying it should come here. Theoretically it's win-win-win. Powerful rear drive sedan. Built in NA, should end up cheaper. Cheaper=more sales, by far the biggest complaint I've heard about it is it's too much $$$. No (or lesser) job losses for Oshawa.

But yeah, probably a pipe dream.
